China organizes some public holidays into extended breaks known as “Golden Weeks” (5–9 consecutive days off). To make this possible, weekend days are sometimes designated as official working days. These appear on the calendar as Makeup Workdays, when businesses and schools are open despite falling on a Saturday or Sunday.

Important Note on 2027 and 2028 Schedules

Please note that while the dates for traditional festivals are known, the official "Makeup Workdays" and exact bridge-day configurations for 2027 and 2028 are subject to final confirmation. The State Council of the People’s Republic of China typically releases the definitive holiday and workday adjustment schedule in November of the preceding year. We recommend checking back closer to these dates for finalized business and travel planning.

Important: Understanding China’s "Golden Weeks" and Makeup Workdays

Unlike most countries, public holidays in China are often organized into "Golden Weeks"-extended periods of 5 to 9 consecutive days off.

The "Trade-Off" (Makeup Workdays): To create these long breaks, the Chinese government "borrows" weekend days. You will notice "Makeup Workdays" on the calendar (usually Saturdays or Sundays) where businesses and schools are officially open to compensate for the mid-week time off.

The major 2028 Golden Weeks are: Spring Festival (Lunar New Year): Jan 24–Feb 1 (9 days), Labour Day: May 1–May 5 (5 days), National Day: Oct 1–Oct 7 (7 days).

Travel & business impact: During Golden Weeks, China experiences the world’s largest seasonal migration. Expect significant price hikes for hotels and flights, extreme crowds at tourist attractions, and a complete pause in manufacturing and government services.

Plan your shipping, bookings, and meetings well in advance of these dates.

Public Holidays in China

元旦

1 Jan 2028

New Year’s Day (Yuandan, 1 January) is the first official holiday of the year in mainland China. While it is shorter and quieter than the Spring Festival, cities decorate their main streets, shopping districts run winter promotions, and families enjoy a day off together. Schools and offices close, and some people use the day for short winter trips or to prepare for the bigger Lunar New Year season coming a few weeks later.

春节

24 Jan–1 Feb 2028

Spring Festival (Chinese New Year, Chunjie) is China’s most important traditional holiday. It marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year and triggers the world’s largest annual human migration (chunyun), as hundreds of millions of people return to their hometowns. Families gather for a lavish New Year’s Eve dinner, hang red couplets, give red envelopes (hongbao), and watch the national gala on TV. Firecrackers, dragon dances, temple fairs, and visits to relatives fill the first days of the new year. It is a celebration of renewal, family unity, and good fortune.

国际妇女节

8 Mar 2028

International Women’s Day (8 March) recognizes women’s social, cultural, and economic contributions. In mainland China it is a half‑day holiday for women only, and many workplaces host events or give small gifts to women employees.

清明节

4 Apr 2028

Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day, early April) is a day to honor ancestors and reconnect with family roots. Families visit ancestral graves, clean the tombstones, burn incense or joss paper, and offer flowers or food. It is also a springtime outing day: many people fly kites, enjoy picnics, or go to parks to admire fresh greenery, reflecting the ancient idea of balancing remembrance with the joy of spring.

劳动节

1–5 May 2028

Labour Day (1 May) is China’s version of International Workers’ Day. It used to be a three-day holiday and is still often combined with a travel window, so tourist sites, high-speed trains, and big cities see a surge of visitors. Families shop, travel, or attend public events. It is a modern, urban holiday that signals the start of the warm season.

端午节

28 May 2028

Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Jie, 5th day of the 5th lunar month) commemorates the ancient poet and statesman Qu Yuan. People eat zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves), hang mugwort and calamus to ward off evil, and in many southern cities watch thrilling dragon-boat races. It is a colorful, very Chinese holiday that blends history, food, and river culture.

国庆节

1–7 Oct 2028

National Day (1 October) marks the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and opens the famous ‘Golden Week’. Government buildings and public squares are decorated with red flags and flower displays; Beijing may host military or mass parades on major anniversaries. Millions of people travel during this week to scenic spots, historic cities, or to visit family, making it one of the busiest periods of the year for transport and tourism.

中秋节

3 Oct 2028

Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhongqiu Jie, 15th day of the 8th lunar month) celebrates reunion, the harvest, and the full moon. Families gather for dinner, admire the moon, and share mooncakes filled with lotus, red bean, or egg yolk. Parks and river promenades become lively in the evening. For many Chinese people living away from home, Mid-Autumn is an emotional reminder of family and hometown.
