Key Planning Insights for 2027

Impact of Weekend Holidays: 2027 is a challenging year for the workforce as four major holidays-Labour Day (May 1), Assumption Day (Aug 15), Christmas Day (Dec 25), and Boxing Day (Dec 26)-all fall on weekends.

No In-Lieu Observances: Cyprus does not grant substitute days off when holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday. Consequently, there are no additional non-working days on the following Mondays for the general public.

Easter & Labour Day Overlap: Since Orthodox Easter Monday is May 3, it follows immediately after Labour Day (May 1). While this creates a high-activity holiday weekend, the Labour Day holiday is effectively "lost" due to its fall on a Saturday.

Restricted Observation of Easter Tuesday: On May 4, closures are limited to banks and schools. Private sector businesses, offices, and retail shops will resume regular operations and remain open as usual.

Families often gather for relaxed meals, cafés fill up for an easy holiday brunch, and coastal promenades are popular if the weather is mild. Expect many offices to be closed and some businesses operating on reduced hours.

Labour Day (Πρωτομαγιά, 1 May) is celebrated across Cyprus with a strong springtime feel. Many people spend the day outdoors, and towns can host community events. It’s a public holiday nationwide, so expect government offices to be closed and some businesses to operate reduced hours.

4 May 2027

Easter Tuesday (Τρίτη της Διακαινησίμου) is widely observed in Cyprus as part of the Easter period, especially for local gatherings and extended family time. It is a bank holiday and a school holiday, but most private‑sector businesses and retail shops operate as normal.

Αγίου Πνεύματος

20 Jun 2027

Pentecost (Αγίου Πνεύματος) is observed as a public holiday and often feels like a calm early-summer pause. With warmer weather and longer days, people plan seaside outings and family lunches. In tourist areas, some services remain active, but many offices are closed.

Δευτέρα Πεντηκοστής

21 Jun 2027

Whit Monday (Δευτέρα Πεντηκοστής) extends the Pentecost break and is often used for travel, beach time, or returning home from weekend trips. It’s a nationwide public holiday, so expect closures and holiday hours for services.

15 Aug 2027

Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Η Κοίμησις της Θεοτόκου, 15 August) is an important summer feast in Cyprus, marked by church services and local celebrations. As it falls in peak holiday season, coastal areas may be busy while many offices close and businesses run on reduced schedules.

Επέτειος Κυπριακής Ανεξαρτησίας

1 Oct 2027

Cyprus Independence Day (1 October) commemorates the island’s independence and is marked by official events and public ceremonies. It’s a nationwide public holiday, so plan for closures; it’s also a good day for cultural sightseeing with a quieter pace in business districts.

28 Oct 2027

Ohi Day (Το Όχι, 28 October) commemorates Greece’s refusal (‘No’) in 1940 and is observed in Cyprus with parades, ceremonies, and flag displays. It’s a nationwide public holiday, meaning schools and many workplaces close or run limited hours.
