Key Planning Insights for 2027

Labour Day Shift (May 1): In 2027, May 1 falls on Orthodox Holy Saturday. By Greek law, when Labour Day coincides with Holy Week or Easter, it is officially shifted to the first following workday. For 2027, Labour Day will be observed on Tuesday, May 4.

The "Mega" Weekend: Because of the Labour Day shift, the continuous non-working period is Friday, April 30 – Tuesday, May 4. This is the longest holiday window of the year.

No In-Lieu Days: Except for Labour Day, Greece does not move holidays to Monday if they fall on a weekend. You "lose" the holiday benefit for Aug 15, Dec 25, and Dec 26 in 2027.

Bridge Day Opportunities: Independence Day (Mar 25): Falls on a Thursday; taking Friday off creates a 4-day weekend. Ochi Day (Oct 28): Falls on a Thursday; another 4-day weekend opportunity.

1 Jan 2027

New Year’s Day (Πρωτοχρονιά, 1 January) marks the beginning of the year in Greece. Families gather for festive lunches, exchange wishes, and share the traditional vasilopita - a cake with a hidden coin symbolizing luck for the year ahead. Cities host fireworks and church bells ring to welcome the new year.

Θεοφάνεια

6 Jan 2027

Epiphany (Θεοφάνεια, 6 January) celebrates the baptism of Jesus Christ. The highlight of the day is the Blessing of the Waters, where priests throw a cross into the sea, rivers, or lakes, and swimmers dive in to retrieve it for good fortune. It’s a deeply spiritual day celebrated across Greece, especially in coastal towns.

Καθαρά Δευτέρα

15 Mar 2027

Clean Monday (Καθαρά Δευτέρα) marks the beginning of Lent, forty days before Easter. Families enjoy picnics outdoors, eating fasting foods like lagana bread, olives, and taramosalata, while children fly kites. It’s a day of renewal, cleansing, and the joy of spring’s arrival.

Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου

Annunciation (Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου, 25 March) celebrates the Archangel Gabriel’s message to the Virgin Mary.
